This is Elvin Hayes at the peak of his powers — a Hall of Famer, NBA champion, and 12-time All-Star frozen in cardboard during the most celebrated era of Washington Bullets basketball. The 1976-77 Topps #120 Elvin Hayes puts "The Big E" in his prime Washington Bullets uniform, two years before he and fellow Hall of Famer Wes Unseld led the franchise to its only championship.

What separates this card from the pack is the format itself. 1976-77 Topps Basketball is the largest flagship sports card Topps ever printed — each card measures a commanding 3⅛" × 5¼", an oversized "tallboy" format that towers over any standard-issue card in any sport. The set arrived at a historic crossroads: the ABA had just folded, four of its franchises absorbed into the NBA, and Topps responded with a tightly focused 144-card set built almost entirely around proven stars — which means every slot on the checklist earns its place. Hayes occupies #120, a base card in a set that contains no filler.

  • Player: Elvin "The Big E" Hayes — NBA Hall of Fame inductee (1990), 1978 NBA Champion, 12-time consecutive All-Star (1969–1980), and three-time All-NBA First Team
  • Career totals: 27,313 points and 16,279 rebounds over 16 seasons — numbers that ranked him among the all-time leaders at retirement
  • Set: 1976-77 Topps Basketball — the largest mainstream hoops cards ever issued by Topps, printed in a single 144-card series at the dawn of the post-ABA NBA era
  • Format: Oversized tallboy (3⅛" × 5¼") — known to be difficult to preserve in top grade due to their size and storage challenges

Raw copies of this card trade in the low-to-mid single digits for well-loved examples, while clean, well-centered copies command a meaningful premium — condition is everything on these oversized tallboys, where surface wear and centering issues are the norm, not the exception. If you're chasing a vintage HOF big man card that doubles as a conversation piece, this one delivers the size, the résumé, and the history.
